Historical Ranch in Mcelmo Canyon : Cortez : Montezuma County : Colorado

Farm Description

If you love the beauty of nature, the simplicity of life and the magic of the ancient world, this is a property unparalleled to any other private facility in

Southwestern Colorado. Canyon of the Ancients Guest Ranch is located in the serene, quaint and water abundant McElmo Canyon, a Sedona-like setting in

Montezuma County in the countryside of Cortez, Colorado with approximately 1,100 acres. This is a rare blend of three unique and charming guest houses

to accommodate numerous guests and a care-taker’s residence with 60+-acres of irrigated pastures, exceptional water rights, organic gardens and

abundant fruit orchards of apple, peach, plum, pear and apricot, a hoop house, chicken and sheep pens, and numerous original outbuildings that have been

beautifully restored yet still keeping the ancient historical feeling of times past. The Ranch is a peaceful place to explore over 5,000 documented thousands

-of-years-old archeological sites in this exquisite region. The north side of the Ranch has exceptionally beautiful rock formation that has been use for

international photographer, wild-animal workshops. Recently a very interesting Anasazi village site has been discovered by the owner on the ranch,

including what looks to be an ancient plaza with kiva, large boulder with collapsed structure of stones, partial wall from a tower, and an unique dam structure

with remnants of pottery. A nearby rock art panel was also discovered. There are petrified wood logs and dinosaur fragments found nearby. Once

owned by a legendary cowboy, Elden Zwicker, the road that leads to the Ranch has been called “Mormon Road” since early Mormons used it to migrate to

Utah. The road is also nicknamed “Robber’s Path”, as Butch Cassidy is rumored to have his fortune in the Canyon.
