Farm Description

ONTONAGON RIVER PARCEL FOR SALE! This 56-Acre Wooded property has over 2000 Feet of Ontonagon River Frontage! The Ontonagon River is a tributary to Lake Superior in Ontonagon County, in the western portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This river parcel is located on an "ox bow" of the river just about 2+ miles south of were it discharges at the Ontonagon Harbor. This harbor is a federally-maintained deep-draft navigation channel. It has provided an early port for the shipping of copper, lumber, and a fishing industry. The Ontonagon River watershed covers 1,384 square miles and is split between Ontonagon, Houghton, Gogebic, and Iron counties in Michigan, and Wisconsin's Vilas County. This main stem of the river is 25 miles long and is formed by a confluence of several longer branches, portions of which have been collectively designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. The Ontonagon River's principal tributaries are its West, South, Middle and East branches, all of which flow in part through the Ottawa National Forest. The river is canoeable throughout the summer with high water in the spring and fall providing the best canoeing for the more experienced canoeist. You will be able to fish for brook, rainbow, and steelhead trout, northern, and walleye from your own front yard! There are thousands of acres of State of Michigan lands just a half mile due south of the property for walk-in access for more hunting and stream fishing. Wildlife in the Ontonagon area is an abundant resource, ranging from the larger species like black bear, white-tailed deer, and coyote to the smaller species like snowshoe hare, cottontail, ruffed grouse, ducks, and geese. Just a few miles to the west is the Ontonagon Trail Number 12, a Multi-Use State Trail for some great deep snow Snowmobiling! The property is close to the Village of Ontonagon, founded in 1843. The Village is the county seat. It has shopping, dining, service stations, a library, and a great museum. To the west and east of the Village are beautiful sandy Lake Superior beaches for wading, swimming, and beach combing! There is a Village Marina there for public use. This facility is a full-service 38-slip marina which includes a boat hoist, four boat launch ramps, a service building, a fish-cleaning station, and a paved parking and boat storage area. Ontonagon also has a Golf Club which owned by the members and open to the public - it is the Western most golf club in the USA’s Eastern Time zone. This property will provide a starting point for great U.P. Recreation in Every Season! (There is no written legal easement for this property.)
