Gerty Lot 3 is a small tract of 5.37 acres with no HOA (Home Owners Association), dues or covenants. It is available for immediate possession. Those moving here with children would be within the Calvin School District which scores above average against other Oklahoma school districts. This tract is mainly pasture with a really nice mix of desirable native grasses. It also contains a nice pond surrounded by timber. Access to the property is on the West and South sides. Rural water and electricity is on the West side. It is less than 2 hours to Oklahoma City or Tulsa and is less than 40 miles to McAlester.
This property lays 2 miles east of the small town of Gerty. The community's original name was Buzzard Flop, situated in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. Although buzzards may not have roosted there, the place was a rest stop for travelers and freighters on the trail from Fort Smith, Arkansas, through McAlester and the Choctaw Nation to Stonewall. The site provided clear spring water and level camping spots. Before 1880 the surrounding country (owned by the Choctaw Nation) made an ideal cattle country, many of the American Indians possessing large ranches. In 1893 James S. Raydon built a log cabin, put in a grocery store, and established a post office. The latter was approved by the federal government on June 15, 1894, and called Guertie, for Raydon's daughter. Raydon was the first postmaster. Later Gertie was changed to Gerty to avoid any confusion with the Oklahoma city of Guthrie.
