Local Area

In the heart of Colorado lies Hartsel. Hartsel was founded in 1880 and named after Samuel Hartsel, a local cattle rancher and farmer. South Platte River flows through town and attracts anglers to its Gold Medal fishing waters. The area supports recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, boating, and camping.

Area Attractions

South Platte River

The pristine waters of the South Platte River form in the South Park grasslands in Park County. The river then flows for 439 miles and through 7 dams. After it flows out of Spinney Mountain Reservoir, the South Platte River flows into Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir. This stretch is known as the Dream Stream because of its epic fishing. Anglers take advantage of the Gold Medal fishing and can also enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, or utilizing other non-motorized watercraft on certain portions of the river.

Antero Reservoir

Antero Reservoir was formed after the first dam was constructed in 1909 on the South Platte River. The reservoir is approximately fifteen minutes from the town of Hartsel, Colorado. Situated in South Park, the area is a scenic basin near Pike National Forest. The reservoir is comprised of 2,500 surface acres where visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and ice fishing in the winter months.

Spinney Mountain Reservoir

Spinney Mountain Reservoir is in Spinney Mountain State Park which offers fishing, boating, hiking, hunting, and sailboarding. This reservoir attracts anglers for its Gold Medal fishing. Trophy-sized trout and northern pike can be caught with flies or lures only. Wildlife is abundant so hunting is fruitful whether it be mule deer, waterfowl, jackrabbits, or coyotes.

Eleven Mile Reservoir

This large reservoir of 7,662 surface acres draws anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can boat, fish, ice skate in winter, hike, or bike. There are over five miles of trails to venture out on. Bird watchers can delight in observing the migratory birds during their flight season. Anglers can cast away for goldfish trout, northern pike, kokanee salmon, and carp.
