Farm Description

They say there are “100 mile views” in the San Luis Valley for good reason. You can see layers of mountains in every direction. The Sangre de Cristos to the east and the San Juans to the west. You don't have commercial buildings, residences, or trees to block your view of the southern Rockies that surround you out here. The valley is loved for the open and unobstructed views.

The land is easy to work with. You can level the sagebrush and build driveways, RV pads, or a foundation for your cabin. This is a sought-after corner lot right on Maestas and Slegers Rd in the Sangre de Cristo Ranches. These are well maintained roads year round. The corner lots make for a great drive-in/drive-out situation for campers. You will also be able to access highway 159 without effort to take you 15 minutes to Fort Garland. Here you will have gas, groceries, and Dollar General for supplies. There is a hardware store and a few local restaurants for convenience. (Try anything with green chiles. It is a locally grown staple in the area. The Rio Grande watershed, high desert, and mountain environment is perfect for growing green chiles. It's everywhere and the locals have perfected their recipes.)

Alamosa is another 20 minutes and has more small city amenities. Alamosa is the hub of the valley. Here you will find over 50 restaurants and coffee houses, everything from fast food to fine dining. Do yourself a favor and skip the chain restaurants. The local flavor is the best. There are festivals throughout the year such as the Early Iron Festival Car show with over 500 vintage cars, The Alamosa Arts Festival, the Summer Concert Series, Ice Sculpture competitions in January, and the Rodeo. Some of the best bull riding in the country happens right here. Top riders in the Prca and PBR come to face the bulls. There are big box stores such as Wal-Mart, ACE Hardware, Big R, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar. You will also find local boutiques, toy stores, hobby shops, and artisan studios throughout the downtown area. The Farmers Market is a great place to sample all things home grown and locally made. The Rio Grande River runs right through town. You can visit the city park and enjoy views of the river as well as the recreational areas.

There is so much to see and do here but one thing I must mention. I said before that this 5.78 parcel sits on Maestro's road. The road is named after the internationally known sculptor Huberto Maestas. He has a studio outside of San Luis and is famous for creating the Shrine of the Stations of the Cross in San Luis. The bronze statues are so powerful and executed with such detail that replicas are housed in the Vatican in Rome. The shrine is visited by tourists from all over the country and should definitely be placed high on your to-do list.

You can see by the pictures that this land is unique. It is unspoiled, untouched, unpolluted. That is a rarity itself but to be in such a majestic and spiritual place filled with geological wonders and oddities makes it a one-of-a-kind destination. You will not be disappointed in the culture and natural beauty of the San Luis Valley.

If you want to see more, please Google: The Great Sand Dunes, Zapata Falls, Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area, The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Colorado Alligators, Alien Watchtower Moffit, and Alamosa Wildlife Refuge Areas.
