Render Plantation was founded in 1832 when James Render moved from Wilkes County, Georgia to Meriwether County. Here he founded a plantation that eventually grew to nearly 2,000 acres. Construction on the main house for Render Plantation began in 1832 shortly after James Render's arrival in Meriwether County. The home was originally designed in the Plantation Plain style. An expansion in 1867 added size to the home for the expanding Render family. A major renovation was performed in 1907. An architect from Columbus, T. Firth Lockwood, was hired to transform the home into a neoclassical style that was popular in the early twentieth century South. The large porches, columns, and grand staircase were added to the home during this process.
Today, we still see the results of the Render family's vision for the home, along with the current owner's efforts to rehabilitate the house. Every effort has been taken to maintain the period style of the home. Bead board ceilings are installed throughout the house, custom trim and furnishings take one back in time upon entering the house. Any viable, original materials from the original construction and 1907 renovation were used to maintain the historic look and feel of the home. Modern conveniences and comforts, however, were not sacrificed in the latest work on the house. A large modern kitchen with Viking appliances provides the perfect place to prepare meals for guests. The 6 bedrooms all have their own bathrooms and are decorated in their own themes. A large covered porch was added to the rear of the home with a custom, brick smoker.
In the immediate area of the home are several buildings, both old and modern. The detached kitchen and spinning room still stands to the rear of the home. This building was once used to prepare the meals for the home. It was detached to reduce the risk of fire to the house. A stone smoke house also stands to the immediate rear of the home. In more recent times a 3 bedroom 2 bath house was constructed to the north of the main house. This additional home provides extra sleeping quarters and privacy for guests. A matching caretaker's home is located a short distance from the main house.
The main house sits on the Western edge of the 345 +/- acres. It looks out over the pastures and hardwood ridges that make up that portion of the property. A barn is located at the foot of the hill that is still serviceable for equipment storage or livestock. The Render family cemetery is located to East of the home. This area gives us a glimpse into the extensive history of the plantation. Many of the family members as well as plantation occupants are interred in this area. The cemetery is located in a peaceful setting atop a hardwood ridge that looks out over a pasture.
The 345+/ - acres of Render Plantation are set up to be a perfect outdoors retreat. The property borders are mainly made up of two creeks that bar access from neighboring properties. The roads and trails carry one through the pastures located around the home into the pine timber and hardwood bottoms that make up the bulk of the acreages. A system of game openings are in place and are planted yearly to feed the large population of deer and other game on the property. Many of these food plots are overlooked by permanent shooting houses that maximize comfort for long sits.
