3,600 Acre Ranch, Quemado : Quemado : Catron County : New Mexico

Farm Description

The 38-bar ranch is without a doubt one of the most unique properties in all of New Mexico. It's also some of the most remote land in the southwest.

Located outside Quemado, the ranch is 38 miles east of the Arizona border and just north of the 3 million acre Gila National Forest.

At only 0.5 persons per square mile, the area is one of the least populated regions in the entire country.

The 38-bar ranch was first purchased in 1972 by renowned western artist and photographer R. Brownell McGrew. Much of McGrew's inspiration came from his love for the rugged beauty of the region and its people. He frequented the nearby Navajo nation and much of his artwork depicted the lives and surroundings of the Navajos.

Construction of the main residence took place over a number of years. McGrew moved as little dirt as possible and the house has various levels. He used mostly local trees for construction and manufactured adobe bricks on site for many of the walls. The interior is rich with one-of a kind artistry from various sources: stained glass windows, handmade doors from Mexico, and custom tile work from various artisans. Too much too list.

To get an overall view of the 38-bar ranch, we've created a comprehensive 15-minute video that shows every building, room, and an overview of the expansive acreage. Find it on Youtube.
