Farm Description
This combination of two adjacent ranches into one block of prime grazing in the heart of cow country. The escarpment of the Powder River Breaks provides ideal habitat for elk, mule deer, and pronghorn. A 384 inch bull elk was harvested in 2017. Estimated to be a year around low overhead 350-400 AU cow calf ranch. This southeastern Montana gem would also be quality yearling pasture. The 9,000+/- deeded acres are complimented by contiguous 4,220+/- acres of BLM and 1,380+/- acres of Montana DNRC. Cows tend to hold weight and calves make strong gains due to the strong grasses and mixed terrain as described in Sam Morton's book "Where the Rivers Run North".
The ranches saddle the divide ( 3,800 to 4,200 feet) between Tongue River to the east and Powder River to the west. Located in Powder River County, Montana along the Wyoming state line it is halfway between Broadus, MT and Sheridan, WY. The ranches include a basic set of working improvements A prairie and timber fire in 2014 cleared a large area of sage brush and timber which has come back with tremendous grass. According to the area averages 18 inches of precipitation per year which produces strong sod and excellent forage.
