This property is located in Tilden Township, in Central Marquette County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. These private waterfalls are located on 2+ Miles of the West Branch of the Escanaba River. This upper part of the river is rocky and scenic and supports brook, brown and some rainbow trout. In his poem, The Song of Hiawatha, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow describes how Hiawatha "crossed the rushing Esconaba". John D. Voelker, writing as Robert Traver, authored fishing stories set on the Escanaba in Trout Madness. The falls are challenging, and there are flat water sections between the drops that flow through beautiful wilderness. It is a groundwater-fed, cold river branch which joins the main river. The East Branch and the Middle Branch of the Escanaba converge in the town of Gwinn to form the main stem. The stretch from this convergence through the flatlands of Marquette County, to the Delta County line is mostly wide and smooth, ideal for canoe trips. From the Delta County line, the river runs south to its mouth on Lake Michigan. The Upper Escanaba River has three major dams: the Greenwood Dam, Schwietzer Dam, and the Cataract Dam. These impoundments support several warm water fish species. The river on this property offered for sale is complete with gorges, canyons, and bedrock which breaks the surface intermittently along the river. It is most noted for The "White City Falls", a Class Iii+ Falls, that is located toward its western end. This falls is only about 4-Feet in height, and 6-Feet in width, but it is between two huge mounds of bedrock. The water pours down a sharp drop into a calm, deep pool. A downstream island provides an excellent view up at the drop. About a half mile distance down-river is the "Second City Falls", a Class IV Falls, which is supposed to be a bigger version of the first falls. Another half mile down-river are the "Island Ledges", a Class II Falls, where as the river encounters an island, it spills across a couple of ledges. A third of a mile further is the "Half-Dome Falls", a Class IV Falls. A large half-dome of rock creates a challenging hump to ride down. After crossing a nice pool, a line of rocks split into a number of pour-overs called "Granite Canyon", a Class IV Falls. Beyond this point, the river smooths out into a wider pool, then swift running water to the eastern end of the property. The river system provides a diverse habitat for birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, for hours of nature-wildlife viewing. Besides kayaking, swimming, and fishing, there are unlimited opportunities for hiking along the exposed rock escarpments, and rugged outcroppings of rock that hug parts of the river.
